Cemetery Wall Saved!
The Standing Committee of the Proprietors of the Grove Street Cemetery have announce that a proposal to remove sections of the historic cemetery wall has been withdrawn.
There was overwhelming community disapproval for the plan, meant to open an interior view of the cemetery to passersby. More than 450 signatures were gathered in a petition against the plan; multiple letters in oppostion were submitted to The New Haven Register; private citizens and members of the preservation community sent letters directly to members of the Standing Committee; a full-capacity crowd gathered at the Proprietor’s Annual Meeting in early October — in short, the community came together to show their support for the preservation of this New Haven Landmark.
Let us now put that energy toward the encouraging the positive changes the Proprietors have proposed, as they form plans to improve the landscaping and lighting along the Grove Street wall, and as they work to preserve and renovate the cemetery Meeting House.
