NHPT is delighted to offer its members the opportunity to tour the extraordinary David S. Ingalls Rink.
The original building was designed by Eero Saarinen and Associates and completed in 1958. Its restoration and expansion were designed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates and completed in 2008.
With catenary curves that define its innovative sculptured space, the “Yale Whale” readily takes its place alongside Saarinen’s iconic Gateway Arch in St. Louis and TWA Terminal at JFK Airport.
The award-winning restoration and expansion of Saarinen’s building have been deemed exemplary for their careful, respectful, and thoughtful engagement with this iconic structure.
The tour will be led by renowned Saarinen scholar Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, of the Yale School of Architecture, and by architect Wesley Kavanagh, who was a principal at Roche Dinkeloo, the direct descendent of Saarinen’s firm, when it undertook the renovations.
This tour will explore the dynamic design and ingenious construction of Saarinen’s remarkable vision. Participants will also encounter the philosophy and execution of a much-admired Modernist restoration project.
Tour is open to NHPT MEMBERS ONLY.
Registration is requested by Wednesday, February 26; and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
