Heritage Date Plaques

Heritage date plaques are a powerful symbol. The visibility of date plaques around the city encourages neighborhood pride and property maintenance and, at the same time, expands awareness of New Haven Preservation Trust and its mission.

Every building has a story, whether it dates from 1806 or 2006. New Haven Preservation Trust encourages owners to explore the history of their property and proudly display an elegant plaque that identifies the year of construction. Plaques are available for structures throughout all New Haven neighborhoods. Historic designation or renovation work is not required.

Almost 200 date plaques have been mounted in 21 city neighborhoods, with dates ranging from 1816 to 1932. Although the plaques are most common in Westville and Newhallville, they can be seen throughout New Haven.

Your plaque will include the 4-digit year (or c. date) of your building’s completion. Plaque is white ceramic, with black lettering and elm-leaf silhouette. Finished plaques are drilled for mounting and hardware is provided.

Please allow 10–12 weeks for processing. Completed plaques can be picked up at the Trust office; we will notify you when your plaque is ready. Hardware will be provided, but mounting is the responsibility of the plaque owner.

There is no requirement for the age, type or location of the building; no renovation or restoration is required. Properties built at any time, in any New Haven neighborhood, are eligible.

You may also make a donation of $60 to support the Heritage Date Plaque program. Your gift will pay for a plaque in a lower-income historic neighborhood.

Payable online, or if you prefer to pay by check or cash, please download the Heritage Date Plaque application form. Includes tax & handling.

We are pleased to offer the plaques at a subsidized price of $60. For more information, please contact our office.
