Historic Structures Fund Application
The Historic Structures Fund (HSF) was established in 1985 to provide small matching grants for the preservation or restoration of noteworthy architectural features of historic buildings, sites, and monuments throughout the City of New Haven. Grants are not awarded for basic maintenance or ordinary repairs. Grants may also be made to support research, documentation and preparation of materials for the purpose of proposing a nomination or retaining a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and/or the State Register of Historic Places. Any person or institution that owns historic property in New Haven in one of the Trust’s priority categories is eligible to apply for a grant.
Historic Structures Fund Priorities:
Wooster Square, Quinnipiac River and City Point local historic districts
NHPT-designated New Haven Landmarks
Properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places
The Trust may make awards for resources outside of these priorities if they possess outstanding historic or architectural significance. Preference is given to low- and moderate-income residents. Non-profit organizations, be they educational, religious, or cultural, are encouraged to apply.
Funding for grants fluctuates each year. Please note that if the Trust receives applications for more funds than are available, preference will be given to projects for buildings with the greatest architectural or historical significance.

Important Information for Applicants

Please provide at least two photographs of the building’s exterior and a detail of the area for which funds are requested. If the restoration is part of a larger project involving plans and specifications, please include copies of those as well.
Please provide a quote for the restoration work from the contractor, listing the items in the scope of work and total cost. Note: if this is part of a larger project, please have the contractor separate out the scope of work and costs for the restoration project you are applying for with this grant.
All work must be performed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, which are available from the Preservation Trust.
All work must be completed within 12 months of award to be eligible for grant payout.
