New Haven takes pride in celebrating one of her hometown sons, Donald Grant Mitchell. During his lifetime, Mitchell was a paradigm of the 19th century renaissance man. An influential landscape architect and best-selling writer, Mitchell’s legacy lives on through his designs for many of New Haven’s public parks, including East Rock and Edgewood Parks, and much more!

Come hear all about this most amazing man for whom the Westville Library is named — as well as the many events being planned throughout 2022 to honor New Haven’s favorite landscaping marvel! To date, eight New Haven-based organizations have come together to create this Celebration honoring Donald Grant Mitchell and others may join in. Currently events and activities are being planned by: New Haven Free Public Library, New Haven Preservation Trust, New Haven Museum & Historical Society, Yale University Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Westville Village Renaissance Alliance, Friends of Edgewood Park, Friends of East Rock Park, and Broken Umbrella Theatre.
