Today we think of New Haven as an educational, financial, and transportation hub, but for much of the 19th and 20th centuries it was also an industrial powerhouse. This presentation will explore the origins of manufacturing in New Haven and the evolution of the city’s numerous manufacturers, large and small, successful and short-lived, those that have disappeared from view, and those that have left impressive physical remains. Behind it all we will ponder the question of what relevance (if any) industrial history has for people living in the Information Age.
The presentation will be given by historian Bruce Clouette, who has been researching and writing about Connecticut history and historic sites since 1975. A contributor to the Trust’s book Carriages and Clocks, Corsets and Locks, he received a PhD in History from UConn and still lives in Mansfield.
